What Is a Dental Veneer?

Veneers are very thin layers of tooth-colored material that are attached to the front of your teeth. The dental veneer is one of the most versatile, minimally invasive treatment options available for a wide variety of dental problems. Veneers are a conservative solution in that they don’t require extensive modification of the teeth, nor is the procedure excessively lengthy or complex.

The Process

Usually, getting porcelain dental veneers is a three-step process. The first step is examining, diagnosing, and planning the appropriate approach and determining whether veneers are the right choice for what you’d like done.

The second stage involves preparing the tooth for the veneer. A very thin layer of enamel, about equal to the thickness of the veneer, is trimmed from the tooth. A mold is made and sent to the lab for the veneers to be constructed. You may or may not have temporary veneers attached, depending on your circumstances.

The final stage is the bonding. When the final veneers are received from the lab, you’ll come in to have the veneers checked for color match and fit. Once everything is set, your tooth will be cleaned, polished, and etched so it can receive the bonding cement. A special light cures the cement and hardens it quickly and firmly. You are then ready to go smile again with confidence. You may have a later follow-up visit to make sure everything is responding well.

Benefits of a Porcelain Veneer

The primary reason porcelain is often chosen over other materials is cosmetic. Porcelain veneers are easily color-matched to surrounding teeth, and porcelain’s translucency is much like that of a natural tooth. Porcelain veneers are also stain-resistant. Other than your smile looking better than ever, porcelain veneers are virtually unnoticeable. Other reasons porcelain is chosen include:

  • It can make teeth whiter when traditional whitening methods won’t work.
  • Gum tissue is less sensitive to porcelain so there is little to no irritation.
  • Porcelain veneers are ultra thin and permanently bonded to the front of your teeth, so it doesn’t take much adjustment time to be comfortable.
  • Caring for porcelain veneers is much the same as your normal good oral hygiene regimen.
