Patients sometimes ask us why we recommend they come in twice a year for a cleaning and checkup. We love this question because it gives us an opportunity to remind you how important it is to maintain your oral health. Bacteria in the mouth can harm your teeth and gums without you even knowing it. Read on to learn more.
Plaque — that hard sticky substance that forms on your teeth and gums — can do quite a bit of harm if it is not treated. Even if you brush and floss regularly, plaque can form into tartar which can only be removed with professional cleaning. Toothbrushes are great for everyday use, but the dental tools we use do a thorough job of cleaning away plaque so that it doesn’t form into tartar.
The symptoms of gum disease can be easy to miss at home. During your regular checkup, we will be able to see whether there is inflammation, a telltale sign that something is not right. Gum disease is important to catch in the early stages because as it progresses, it does more and more damage and is more difficult to treat.
You also may have heard us explain that your oral health is important to your overall health. Neglecting dental care can do more than cause a cavity. In more serious cases, it can lead to more health issues such as heart disease, stroke, and complications with diabetes.
The health of our patients is our top priority and we want to make sure we stay on top of any issues before they become more complex and inconvenient for you. If at any time you have questions or concerns about your teeth or gums, please contact us. We are here to help. Until we see you at your next visit, we wish you all the best.
