Let’s face it, while everyone loves a beautiful smile, few love the visits to the dentist that make that possible. In fact, you may be one of the more than 15% who dread it so much, you avoid the dentist altogether, even though you may have a serious dental issue that needs attention. Fear not. Sedation dentistry makes it possible for those with dental anxiety to have a relaxing and anxiety-free experience. There are several types of sedation dentistry, but intravenous sedation provides the deepest relaxation.
Why IV Sedation?
IV sedation is a safe and easy way to deliver calming medication that is administered intravenously via an injection. It is ideal for those who have:
- High anxiety
- Strong gag reflex
- Low pain threshold
- Extremely sensitive teeth
- Bad reactions to local anaesthesia
- Long or difficult dental procedures planned
- Inability to sit still in the chair for extended periods
- . . . and more
There are many benefits to IV sedation for both patient and dentist. Other sedation methods may need to be started prior to your office visit, but IV sedation takes effect almost immediately, quickly easing your worries. The dentist can monitor and adjust the sedation as needed to keep you in the optimal state of relaxation. It’s sometimes called “twilight sedation” because while you won’t be asleep, you won’t be fully awake, either. You may be able to follow basic commands, but you will be far less aware of the sounds and smells around you, without a real concept of the time the procedure takes.
There are some things you need to keep in mind. You may be asked to avoid eating and drinking for a specified time prior to your visit, and some medications may need to be temporarily stopped. You will want someone to bring you to your appointment because you will most likely feel a little groggy and “out of it” for a while after your procedure. Even if you think you have recovered, it takes awhile for the sedative to completely wear off and you will need someone to drive you home from our office.
