As your dentist, I want to help you keep your teeth and mouth healthy. I am especially concerned when you are experiencing any kind of oral or facial pain — because that’s not normal. When should you come in to have your pain checked out?
Oral Pain Can Indicate Problems
Have you had sharp pain or extra sensitivity in a tooth recently? Does the pain intensify when you bite or chew? Have your gums become tender or swollen in that area? It could be that the pulp inside your tooth has become infected. If you don’t see us here at Baldwinsville Gentle Dentistry to have it checked and taken care of, the pain will continue or worsen, and you could lose the tooth.
Save the Tooth With a Root Canal
The soft inner pulp contains the nerves, connective tissue, and blood vessels that a developing tooth requires. Even though it is usually protected by the tough outer layer of enamel, the pulp is subject to damage and infection through a deep cavity, cracks or fractures in the tooth, or trauma. The bone that keeps your tooth and jaw connected can become damaged in an infection, putting you at high risk of losing the tooth completely.
Fortunately, once developed, your tooth doesn’t need the inner pulp to survive because the tooth can also receive nourishment from surrounding tissues. A root canal procedure gives us the ability to remove the infection by removing the pulp, while keeping the tooth itself.
In the root canal procedure, we give you a local anesthetic, so the process itself will be painless. We make an opening in the crown of the tooth to remove the pulp, and we treat the cavity to prevent further infection. Then we fill the canal with a rubber-like material and seal the opening with a filling or crown. The whole process can be done in one appointment! You may have a follow-up with us later to make sure the infection has been totally cleared.
